Pediatric Hernia Repair in Los Angeles

A hernia is a gap in the abdominal wall that lets tissue push through. In children these are almost always congenital — present from birth — rather than caused by lifting or strain. Most are straightforward to repair, and most children are home the same day.

Hernias in Children

If you have noticed a bulge in your child's groin or at the belly button, a pediatric surgeon can tell you whether repair is needed and when.

Types of hernia in children

Inguinal hernia

Appears as a bulge in the groin or scrotum, often more obvious when a child cries, strains or stands. More common in boys and in babies born prematurely. Inguinal hernias in children do not close on their own, so repair is generally recommended once the diagnosis is made.

Umbilical hernia

A bulge at the belly button, very common in infants. Many close on their own during the first few years, so repair is usually considered only if the hernia persists into later childhood or causes problems.

Epigastric hernia

A smaller defect in the midline above the navel, which does not close on its own.

Signs that need urgent assessment

A bulge that becomes firm, tender or red, or will not flatten; vomiting; a baby who cannot be consoled. These can indicate an incarcerated hernia, which needs prompt medical attention.

How the repair is done

Usually a short outpatient operation under general anesthesia. Depending on the hernia and the child, the repair may be open or laparoscopic. The defect is closed and the incisions are small. Most children go home the same day.

Recovery

Most children are back to normal activity within a few days, with rough play limited for a short period. A follow-up visit checks healing.

When to see a pediatric surgeon

Any persistent groin bulge; an umbilical hernia still present in later childhood; and urgently, any bulge that is hard, painful or discolored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my child's hernia close on its own?

Umbilical hernias often do during the first few years. Inguinal and epigastric hernias do not, and are repaired once diagnosed.

Is hernia repair in a child an emergency?

Usually it is planned. It becomes urgent if the hernia becomes stuck, which is why a firm, tender bulge should be assessed straight away.

How long does recovery take?

Most children are comfortable within a few days and back to full activity within a couple of weeks.
